On Sat 18 June Downs 3rds came up against league leaders Oxford & Bletchingdon Nondescripts 3rds. Downs won the toss and put the visitors into bat. Some very tight bowling by Fin Wightman and Rob Owen restricted the score to just 22 from the first 12 overs. We then brought on Sam Collins who proceeded to tear through the Nondies batting line-up, finishing with 4-8 from his 6 overs. Edward Cope replaced Sam and wickets continued to fall aided by some sharp catching from Tom Ling and Simon Smith. Nondies were all out for 95 from 34 overs. Nondies opened their bowling with the division’s highest wicket taker and we were one wicket down at the end of the first over. Nick Angus and Freddie Smith then batted through a gloomy (weather) spell gradually increasing the run rate. They had added 72 for the second wicket when Freddie was out for 28, leaving Nick Angus to complete the match with an excellent unbeaten 55. A resounding 8-wicket win lifts us to 3rd in the table. We have now already beaten both teams ahead of us – this should give us confidence to continue our current good run of form.
